Nightlife as democratic infrastructure: new report explores the political potential of grassroots nighttime culture

What does a dancefloor have to do with democracy? A new Democracy in Action report, Nightivism in Practice: A Best Practice Report on Grassroots Nighttime Culture and Democracy, explores how grassroots nighttime spaces can foster belonging, political expression and civic participation - particularly among communities that are often marginalised in formal democratic life.

Produced by VibeLab, the report draws on interviews, workshops and survey responses from 17 nighttime practitioners working across Europe and beyond. Their experiences show that clubs, collectives and other nighttime spaces can do much more than provide entertainment: they can create safe spaces, build community ties, support political discussion, connect people to formal democratic processes and offer room for protest, solidarity and mutual aid.

The report connects these findings to Democracy in Action’s broader framework of cultural spaces as STAGE, FORUM, LAB and CLASSROOM. Nighttime spaces can act as stages for political and artistic expression, forums for debate, laboratories for testing new ways of living together and classrooms for informal civic learning.

At the same time, the research highlights the pressure many practitioners face, including political repression, funding loss, online suppression, safety risks and burnout. The report therefore calls on the EU to recognise grassroots nighttime spaces as civic and cultural infrastructure, protect practitioners at risk and safeguard cultural funding from political interference.

Ultimately, Nightivism in Practice argues that nightlife should not be seen only as entertainment or economic activity. In the right conditions, it can be a place where people learn, practise and defend democracy together.
