Democracy in Action Expands Pan-European Exchange with New Workshop in Skopje
Democracy in Action will host a second international knowledge exchange workshop, Futuring New Worlds, in Skopje, North Macedonia from 11–14 November 2026 in collaboration with Lokomotiva. Bringing together artists, curators, and grassroots cultural organisations from across Europe, the workshop will explore how artistic and curatorial practices can strengthen youth participation, democratic imagination, and transnational cultural exchange.

Following our previous announcement regarding our Democracy in Action workshop “Grassroots Culture for Youth Climate Action”, taking place in Izmir, Türkiye in September 2026, we are thrilled to announce a second knowledge exchange workshop titled “Futuring New Worlds” taking place in Skopje, North Macedonia from 11-14 November 2026 in collaboration with Lokomotiva - Centre for New Initiative in Arts and Culture.
Our desire to involve a diversity of actors to bring about meaningful dialogue will be further developed through this workshop, which takes place in the context of Curating in Context 5, an international school for critical reflection, curating, and performing contemporary art organised by Lokomotiva with the theme Futuring New Worlds for its 2026 edition.
For this workshop, three organisations have been selected from the 400 participants to our #DiA survey to participate based on their commitment to innovative curating practices and strong beliefs in the necessity of youth mobilization through the arts. We look forward to welcoming them to the workshop activities and roundtables in Skopje.
- Semmelweisklinik (Vienna, Austria)
- KONTEJNER (Zagreb, Croatia)
- Ziemniaki i (Warsaw, Poland)
Curating in Context and the localised experiences of participants bring about urgent questions:
- How can contemporary art be brought closer to young people?
- How can socially relevant themes such as youth engagement be meaningfully engaged through artistic and curatorial practices?
The workshop invites participants to jointly reflect on the place of artistic, curatorial practices in imagining and performing more caring and just worlds for youth groups. The exchanges will propose utopia as a method: participants from independent cultural organisations are encouraged to draw on nonlinear and interdependent perspectives across artistic, ecological, gender, pedagogical, and political forms of knowledge.
Such methods are centered around a collective questioning on the role of young people in developing a coherent democratic society, in an effort to create meaningful interactions amongst professionals and amplify a sense of pan-european grassroot network. Participants are also given a platform to share their vision and best practices regarding youth participation in an effort to open up methodologies and outcomes.
